Comments to the educational concept

Dr. M. Neumann:

Endo-Trainer™ is successfully established as a decentralized educational concept since many years. It offers extremely realistic hands-on training of endoscopic and surgical procedures on biological, perfused organ systems. Practical skills and learning curves can measurably be improved both individually and as a team. Thus, errors, complications, and lengthy interventions can all be reduced.

For the continuation and expansion as an umbrella concept in the areas of GI-Endoscopy, Surgery/NOTES and Pneumology, a new partnership concept has been established. As a surgeon I am especially pleased that the German Society for Surgery (DGCH) directly participates, and offers customized courses for its members and associated specialist societies. The positioning under the umbrella of the DGCH is an important step for the lasting advancement of this educational offer and ancillary initiatives in quality management.

We are looking forward to a successful collaboration in this set-up, where support from industry partners also plays a key role.

Prof. H. Bauer:

I am delighted that this project, which already was supported in its early stages in 1997 by the chairmanship of the German Society for Surgery, has continuously developed so well over the years both interdisciplinary and internationally, and now also is available for surgical disciplines as a decentralized educational concept with courses offered by the DGCH.

This educational concept may also render valuable services in the current discussion on safe development and responsible clinical introduction of novel technologies, such as presently NOTES, and may build interdisciplinary bridges. It certainly is a major advantage that extensive expertise has been built with this type of event which now can be drawn on.

Quality assurance and the sensible application of recognized quality management systems also are relevant aspects in education and surgical performance which systematically should be pursued, and which are of central concern to the DGCH as an umbrella society.

I wish this project an auspicious start and am looking forward to potential synergies with our industry partners
